The Alpine Clubs in France and Italy

Club Alpin Français

The French Alpine Club (Club Alpin
Français) has had -- and still has -- a great importance in spelean history through its numerous speleological groups. Almost every local section, devoted mainly to rock climbing, skiing and hiking, has its own caving club. In 1984 the C.A.F. has a total of 30 "groups speleo", including Paris (Speleo-Club de Paris),Nice (Club Martel), Briangon, Montpellier, etc.

Speleo-stamp collectors may wish to possess the 1974 French stamp, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Club Alpin Frangais (Yvert & Tellier no 1790, inexpensive) , as well as the private (red) cancellation from the C.A.F. office in Paris.

In Italy the same situation prevails with a 1963 stamp (Yvert & Tellier nO 886, a little more expensive) issued for the centenary of the Club Alpino Italiano (C.A.I.) which also includes many local caving groups.

But both stamps have no direct reference to speleology.
