On Friday October
10. 1986 I was able to visit the pleasant town of Cave Spring, Georgia and
its small but modern post office. The postmaster informed me that Cave
Spring never had precanceling devices, and that their machine canceller
was out of order. He said that they had a lot of trouble with it, and
wasn't sure it was worth repairing. The only cancellation device in
current use is a double-ring USPS self-ink date stamp, using purple ink.
They do not have a 4-bar cancelling device.
A large flow of beautiful clear water emerges from a small cave in the
town park and from several nearby resurgences. They empty jointly into a
small pond, from which a creek runs to the municipal swimming pool.
Pipes about 25 cm in diameter conduct the city's water from a stream
passage at the back of the main room. The cave is electrically lighted
and is open to the public weekends during summer, admission 50c; two
colored postcards are available, as well as some surface views.
The post office is
open from 8:30 to 4:30 Eastern time, year round. Telephone: (404)
777-8698.
