The Two Grutas de Rumichaca: Which one is represented on the Stamps?

by Jacques Chabert

In 1955 and 1956 Ecuador issued two stamps showing the Gruta de Rumichaca, provincia El Carchi (Scott C288 and C310, Stanley Gibbons 1052 and 1052a, Yvert et Tellier A285 and A285a). The only original information we had on the cave itself came from the first (and excellent) paper on speleophilately (Rassegna Speleologica ltaliana, 1960). The authors, Pierre Strinati and Villy Aellen, took their data from The South American Handbook, 1951-58 (34th annual edition), London, p.464 & 489.

Gruta de Rumichaca (provincia El Carchi )

According to Jean-Pierre Besson, from Tarbes, France, who is preparing an inventory of Ecuadorian caves, there are in fact two different caves, Rumichaca de la Paz and Rumichaca de Tulcan (the one presented in Strinati-Aellen's article). But Besson argues that the stamps apparently represent the other cave, Rumichaca de la Paz, before it was transformed into a sanctuary, with esplanade, lights and Holy Virgin.

Who can confirm this point?
